Auburn legend and current Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had some harsh words for his team’s fans that decided to applaud Johnny Manziel’s injury Sunday.

“Only thing I can say is, I was saddened to see the crowds’ response to when he was getting hurt,” Newton said during his postgame interview. “I just think it was classless at that time. Anytime when a person is hurt, you don’t celebrate. I’ve had that done in my career and it takes the integrity out of the game. I told him I was pulling for him and I hope in the offseason we can link up. But, for the crowd to respond in that type of way, we’re better than that. That’s not who we are.”

Manziel left the game with 1:49 remaining in the first half after suffering a hamstring injury several drives earlier. The former Texas A&M quarterback made his second career start, going 3-of-8 for 32 yards.

Newton made his return to action less than two weeks after being injured in a car wreck in uptown Charlotte. The former Tiger threw for 201 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 18-of-31 passing, while also rushing for 63 yards and a score on 12 attempts during the Panthers’ 17-13 victory.

Newton also gave complementary words for his fellow SEC and Heisman Trophy winning brethren.

“Well, I’m a fan of his just like a lot of people are,” Newton said. “But, there’s a lot of things he has to learn and it’s just a learning curve. I’m hoping that he was alright.”
