CBS Sports updates bowl projections following SEC's Week 10
The SEC has finally been impacted by bowl cancellations, as it was announced on Wednesday that the Las Vegas Bowl would not make its debut this year.
Currently, CBS Sports expert Jerry Palm has Mizzou projected to play Arizona State in that game, but that projection will have to change next week.
Here’s a look at where Palm projects 11 SEC teams (everyone but Vanderbilt, Tennessee and South Carolina) to play this postseason.
Alabama
- Sugar Bowl (CFP) vs. Notre Dame
Arkansas
- Liberty Bowl vs. West Virginia
Auburn
- Citrus Bowl vs. Indiana
Florida
- Orange Bowl vs. Miami
Georgia
- Peach Bowl vs. Cincinnati
Kentucky
- Gator Bowl vs. Virginia
LSU
- Texas Bowl vs. Texas
Mississippi State
- Birmingham Bowl vs. UAB
Mizzou*
- Las Vegas Bowl vs. Arizona State
Ole Miss
- Music City Bowl vs. Iowa
Texas A&M
- Outback Bowl vs. Maryland
Why is 3-6 Kentucky being sent to the freaking Gator Bowl, exactly?
ans: So Criminal U. can have an almost home game.
Why would A&M be in the Outback Bowl and UGa be in the Peach Bowl? I guess they’re thinking A&M loses to Auburn?
Even if that were to happen, A&M would still finish 2nd in the West and get the higher bowl.
Who is they? Peach chooses whomever they want when they are not a playoff venue.
well whoever will accept the bid as well ?
not following your comment.
JTF, “they” refers to CBS Sports…you know the ones giving the predictions above…
Well, I guess they think The Peach Bowl will pick UGA. Seems obvious.
Yes, that is what I’m calling into question. I don’t get what they’re basing that off of
They can invite anybody they want. Probably basing it on proximity to UGA so less travel during COVID. UGA will assure strong TV ratings.
Guess I was thrown by the Auburn/TAMU reference. That is not relevant.
I get what you’re thinking now. I was thinking that A&M would be the highest ranked team available so a NY6 bowl would want that over a slightly lower ranked UGA.
My Auburn/A&M note was me saying that the only way I saw A&M not being higher ranked than UGA is with a loss against Auburn this weekend.
Wasn’t the Las Vegas cancelled?
Yeah, that would be a great Bowl to attend (record to get in aside).
Yes, top of the article it mentions that.
So is Missouri just going for the buffet?
lol!
I’ll give you the real updated bowl predictions.
Most if not all the non-playoff bowls will be cancelled. The sponsors and co-sponsors don’t want to lose the millions of dollars they stand to lose in a year where their bottom lines have been obliterated by the virus and its political repercussions.
The SEC mandates that publicly traded corporations treat their investors’ needs first before they do anything else. Losing millions in a December bowl game just before having to report Q4 earnings is not something most of these corporations can afford.
ESPN has the only real juice in the process. They need programming, especially at a time where patrons are homebound needing to watch. Maybe, the NCAA will allow the schools to play a postseason game on campus like an extra week in the season, but I believe that in the next 10 days, many other bowls will follow the MO of the Sun Bowl. As of this morning, eight bowls have already called their game off, and one other has relocated it but will possibly cancel as well.
In my scenario, maybe cancelled regular season games can become postseason games with the teams asking their fans to donate something to a chosen charity. Being the last week of the year, donations might be wise if people are looking for final tax deductions.
Or, the schools could decide that enough has been enough and just close the season and move on hoping that things will be better in 2021.
How do corporations lose money in a Bowl game? The Bowl itself loses money when the corporations pull out. The corporate advertising is normally budgeted years in advance. Now, they may pull the money out of the budget to “save” the money they would have spent due to economic conditions. Which is what is happening.
You are correct about the bottom line reporting though.
Relax…bowl games are like playing fantasy football. Most of em will only happen online and in your mind. A line from Hocus-Pocus, they will “cease to exist”…for this year.
