CFB media members react to new CFP selection committee Top 25
Heading into Tuesday night, the top three teams in college football were pretty clear (LSU, Ohio State and Clemson). When it came to the No. 4 spot, there was a wide range of opinions regarding what the College Football Playoff selection committee would ultimately do.
The debate centered around whether the committee would go with an undefeated Power 5 squad or one of the growing number of one-loss teams (which now includes previous-No. 3 Alabama). The committee went with Georgia at No. 4.
On Twitter, college football media members reacted to the rankings during and after the reveal on ESPN. There are a wide range of opinions when it comes to who should be No. 4 and how the committee is viewing certain conferences. Some beat writers of non-Playoff contenders also speculated on how the rest of the New Year’s Six may play out.
Here’s a small sample of what media members are saying:
Minnesota soars from No. 17 to No. 8. Wow. #CFP

This committee really likes the Big 12
— Dan Wolken (@DanWolken) November 13, 2019
Still not a lotta love for Baylor.
— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) November 13, 2019
What a nosedive for Penn State

1) This emoji nonsense is out of hand. Just use the numbers.
2) What the hell are y’all doing to Baylor https://t.co/CnqCIwF2NI

The Big 12 as a whole got a lot of respect from the committee, but its highest-ranked team is behind three Big Ten, three SEC and two Pac-12 teams.

Minnesota beats the committees #4 team and then is still behind a number of 1-loss teams, most notably Alabama who has legitimately beaten nobody. What’s your knock on Minnesota? They have a better win than Bama and 0 losses.

Penn State at 9 seems good for the #Gators’ odds of making a NY6 bowl, I think? Nittany Lions still have to play Ohio State.

Pretty much what they’ve been doing. https://t.co/Ya8AHW2yln

Georgia? Really?
— Ralph D. Russo (@ralphDrussoAP) November 13, 2019
Georgia at #4 is the only real surprise imo, especially with South Carolina losing, but I'm assuming Bama is like 4.1 right behind UGA https://t.co/rphM5QNCLo

Alabama is currently No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Best case scenario for Alabama, imo:
-Top 3 teams (LSU, Ohio State, Clemson) win out
-No. 12 Auburn beats No. 4 Georgia to give the Bulldogs their second loss
-Alabama beats Auburn to pick up a top 10 win
— Marq Burnett (@Marq_Burnett) November 13, 2019
Georgia does not deserve to be in the top four as of right this very instant. That’s insane.
— Barrett Sallee (@BarrettSallee) November 13, 2019
Alabama was never going to win that LSU game and they stay in the top 5. Best win? Tennessee.
— Matt Hetzler (@TheHetz) November 13, 2019
Georgia No. 4? Nah, selection committee. Here’s the correct answer in the Dash First Quarter. https://t.co/Hhd8bESC2A
— Pat Forde (@ByPatForde) November 13, 2019
Bama at 5 is an absolute joke.
— Matt Hetzler (@TheHetz) November 13, 2019
Alabama is still in a great position to make the Playoff. Everything that needed to happen still stands, regardless of No. 4 or 5 ranking.
— Clint Lamb (@ClintRLamb) November 13, 2019
The circumstances are much different this time but Alabama ultimately won that national championship.
— Michael Casagrande (@ByCasagrande) November 13, 2019
Alabama falls to No. 5.
Still very much within reach of the playoff.
An undefeated #LSU would meet No. 4 Georgia in the SEC title. And at this standing, who would slip past Georgia if LSU wins?
Bama?
Oregon?
Rematch? https://t.co/BNV3GMuFKg

The reality is, whoever they had put No. 4, people would have said "Really? Them?"
Outside of those top 3, no one has a clear argument over the rest of the field. Which is why I would have just given it to Minnesota.

Soulja boy voice: GEORGIAAAAA????? https://t.co/kk3EdyVA2v

Georgia is No. 4 over Alabama! Wow! Wow! Wow! Tuscaloosa is about to riot.

Georgia has a much better win than Bama, but a much bigger loss too pic.twitter.com/LehOORM3FR

Bama getting in to the playoff would give Florida a better bowl game.
¯_(ツ)_/¯ https://t.co/83JQqU7qCe

Obviously, if No. 4 Georgia wins out and wins the SEC championship the Bulldogs are in. But what if Georgia loses to Auburn, beats Texas A&M, and then upsets LSU in SEC champ game? Does Georgia get in as an 11-2 SEC champ?
