We are getting close to the College Football Playoff, as Tuesday was the final playoff rankings reveal before this weekend’s conference championship games.
There are a handful of teams that believe heading into the last week of the season they still have a very good chance of making it to the playoffs. Alabama and Texas are two teams that are currently on the outside looking in, and history suggests that both of these teams are long shots to make the Playoff.
No. 7 Texas & No. 8 Bama done? Looks like it: no team ranked lower than No. 6 w/1 week to go has ever made @CFBPlayoff. Lowest ranked teams at this point of season in @CFBPlayoff rankings to make playoff
No. 6 OU (2019)
No. 6 Georgia (2017)
No. 5 Ohio State (2022)
No. 5 OU…— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) November 29, 2023
Since the College Football Playoff, no team ranked lower the No. 6 with only one week left has ever made it to the playoffs. Only twice has No. 6 made it, and those two teams were Oklahoma (2019) and Georgia (2017). The whole conversation will become moot with these 2 teams if they don’t take care of business in their respective conference championships.
Texas will take on Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship, while Alabama is going to have to knock off 2-time defending national champ Georgia in the SEC Championship. The Longhorns and Crimson Tide have their sights set on making CFP history.
