Eleven-time NBA All-Star and current TNT television analyst Charles Barkley joined ESPN’s “Russillo & Kanell” radio show on Friday afternoon to talk about Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry and the NBA playoffs, but was briefly asked to talk about SEC football before he was let go.

Kanell, who played quarterback for Florida State in the 1990s, has publicly acknowledged his distaste for the SEC through recent years. Barkley was asked for his thoughts on Kanell’s “hatred for the SEC,” and his response was hilarious.

“I think that the SEC kind of makes you hate it because the fans are so obnoxious,” said Barkley, who played basketball for Auburn from 1981-84. “I can understand why people don’t like the SEC. I think clearly its by far the best football conference in the world and I think Danny [Kanell] will admit that. The fans are the most obnoxious people — Alabama fans are the worst. Then you factor in Georgia fans — they’re awful — Florida, LSU fans.”

“I think Nick Saban is the greatest coach of all time in my opinion, and when I tell Alabama fans they’re the most obnoxious in in the world you know what they say to me? They don’t even say, ‘No we’re not.’ They say, ‘We’re not as bad as those LSU fans.’ They never take the time to say, ‘We’re not the most obnoxious fans.’ They never try to defend themselves. When they say, ‘We’re not as bad as those LSU fans,’ they let you know just how bad they are.

Barkley went on to praise the conference as a whole, giving props to programs such as Florida, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt for raising their level of competition over the years.

He also took a shot at Kanell’s alma mater, saying that Florida State “plays in a girl conference.”

Never change, Charles.
