Did college football players save the 2020 season late Sunday night?

It was truly a historical night for the sport we love.

Since March, numerous stories have been written about college football players — how they think and feel, but we haven’t actually heard from many of them, but all of that changed Sunday night.

In a day filled with ominous news surrounding college football and the cancelation of the season, as Power 5 commissioners held an emergency meeting on potentially canceling the season, players, led by Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, took to social media in a last-ditch effort to save the season and let their voices be heard to make clear they want to play, despite the COVID-19 concerns. The Big Ten and Pac-12 appear to be attempting to push the ACC, SEC and Big 12 toward canceling the season.

#WeWantToPlay became the No. 1 trending hashtag in the nation late Sunday night. Lawrence and several other big names in college football, including Alabama running back Najee Harris, held their own “emergency meeting” over a Zoom call about the season, per ESPN. The result of that meeting was shared on social media by Lawrence and others.

Among the asks in the graphic, “Use our voices to establish open communication and trust between players and officials; ultimately create a college football players association.”

It remains to be seen if this will help save the 2020 season, but this has breathed a little life back into dire situation.
