It’s hard to avoid coronavirus discussions, even in the sports world.

With the 2020 SEC Tournament set to begin this week in Nashville and the 2020 NCAA Tournament set to begin next week, the topic doesn’t seem to be going anywhere before those events arrive. Especially considering Vanderbilt has canceled classes for the month of March and the Ivy League announced on Tuesday that it would no longer hold its conference tournament this week.

Following these cancelations, NCAA president Mark Emmert has issued the following statement on Tuesday:

NCAA member schools and conferences make their own decisions regarding regular season and conference tournament play.  As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly.

For the time being, the 2020 NCAA Tournament will go on as scheduled but Emmert did leave the door open in his statement for that to change in the days to come.

The 2020 SEC Tournament begins Wednesday in Nashville.
