On one hand, you could argue that UMass doesn’t even belong at the major college football level following last season’s disastrous 1-11 season last fall.

Either way, UMass won’t have the opportunity to redeem itself on the gridiron this fall as the school announced it has shut down its football program for the coming fall season.

The school issued the following statement on Tuesday:

“After consulting with university, state and public health officials, we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 UMass football season.”

It should be noted that UMass already had four of its 11 games for this fall canceled and with no conference affiliation to help with scheduling, the program likely would have found it too difficult to even fill up its schedule for the coming season.

UMass was not scheduled to face any SEC teams in 2020.
