The recent NFL protests surrounding the national anthem have reach into other sports with mixed responses.

Players around the NFL have joined together in various forms of protest and unity following President Donald Trump’s criticism of the NFL and its players. The protest has since spread to other sports and various levels of competition.

It has also been reported on Wednesday morning that one Division III football player has been dismissed from his team for kneeling during the national anthem over the weekend. Mark Schlabach with ESPN reports freshman QB Gyree Durante of Albright College was dismissed after he was the only player of the team to kneel during the national anthem.

It should be noted that the team had decided together to kneel during the coin toss and stand during the national anthem as a show of unity:

“The football team made a team-wide decision to both kneel during the coin toss and stand during the national anthem,” the spokeswoman wrote in a statement. “This action, which was supported by the coaching staff, was created as an expression of team unity and out of the mutual respect team members have for one another and the value they place on their differences. It was established as a way to find common ground in a world with many differing views.”

Teammate Josh Powell said Durante’s decision broke the team’s trust after a joint decision had been made to stand:

“We trusted him throughout the week, after time and time again he told us he would stand,” Powell said, according to NBC 10. “When you can’t have a player on a team that you can trust, he’s got to go.”
