Dabo Swinney made some news late Monday night when he went after a Clemson fan who was critical of the way Swinney has operated the Tigers’ program in recent seasons.

At his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Swinney explained his strong reaction to the fan.

“I had some idiot go Old Testament on me and he got an Old Testament response,” Swinney said. “Y’all print that one … I’m gonna fight for this program.”

The caller, identified as Tyler from Spartanburg, was critical of Clemson’s 4-4 start to the season as well as Swinney’s annual salary. For context, here’s an excerpt of Swinney’s response to the fan via the full transcript:

“People like you, who just love to destroy people with your comments. Alright. I’m sure you’ve never made any bad decisions. I’m sure you’ve lived a perfect life. I’m sure you’ve led a bunch of people. I’m sure you do your job. So to answer your question, I started as the lowest-paid coach in this frickin’ business. Alright, and I’m where I am because I’ve worked my ass off every single day. And I ain’t gotta let some smart-ass kid get on this phone and create this stuff. So if you got a problem with it, I don’t care. Alright. I work for the board of trustees, the president, and the AD. And if they’re tired of me leaving this program, all they gotta do is let me know. I’ll go somewhere else. Where there is an appreciation. Alright.

The Tigers are 4-4 this season after dropping another game to NC State on Saturday. This season will mark Clemson’s first time since 2010 that it hasn’t won at least 10 games.

Clemson will host Notre Dame on Saturday.
