There were three finalists invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony this season: Alabama RB Derrick Henry, Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey and Clemson QB Deshaun Watson.

The number of finalists for the Heisman has always been ambiguous. Last season when Oregon’s Marcus Mariota won the award, there were also only three finalists. That came just one year after Florida State’s Jameis Winston took home the honor among six finalists.

DERRICK HENRY

Alabama’s junior running back has everything that embodies a Heisman candidate: He’s had Heisman moments (how’s four 200-yard rushing games sound?), he’s valuable to his team (getting 90 carries over the last two games should explain that) and his body of work can’t be ignored (he set the SEC single-season record for rushing yards among several others).

2015 stats: 339 carries, 1,986 rushing yards, 5.9 yards per rush, 23 TDs

CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY

Stanford’s sophomore running back does it all. He leads the FBS in all-purpose yards per game with 268.9, and nobody comes close to that. The next-best player is San Jose State RB Tyler Ervin’s 200.8. He also leads the FBS in yards from scrimmage per game with 183.6 yards per game. Once bowl season is over, McCaffrey may join Henry as the only two players to reach 2,000 rushing yards for the season.

2015 stats: 319 carries, 1,847 rushing yards, 5.8 yards per rush, 8 TDs; 41 catches, 540 receiving yards, 13.2 yards per reception, 4 TDs

DESHAUN WATSON

Clemson sophomore QB Deshaun Watson is the signal-caller for the only unbeaten FBS team left in the country, which is the No. 1 seed in this season’s College Football Playoff. Watson has been steady all season with a 69.5 completion percentage that ranks 3rd in the FBS. Watson has thrown for 270.2 yards per game, which is 2nd-best in the ACC, while rushing for 887 yards, which is 3rd-best among all FBS quarterbacks.

2015 stats: 3,512 passing yards, 69.5 completion percentage, 30 TDs, 11 INTs; 163 carries, 887 rushing yards, 11 TDs
