With Week 7 in the books, ESPN Analytics has updated its rankings models. The Football Power Index (FPI) has processed Saturday’s games and updated its top 25 teams.

ESPN Analytics defines the FPI as a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. The post-Week 7 results remind that the FPI rankings do not directly align with a team’s record or resume.

Alabama and Georgia have been the highest SEC teams in the FPI throughout the season. Both teams won in Week 7, but each team dropped 4 spots in the updated FPI.

The Crimson Tide is now No. 7 after a narrow 24-21 win over Arkansas to get to 6-1 on the year. Georgia dipped to No. 8 after defeating Vanderbilt 37-20 to improve to 7-0.

The FPI’s rating quirkiness is perhaps best displayed outside the SEC. In a matchup of AP top 10 teams, Washington defeated Oregon 36-33. The Huskies and Ducks each dropped 1 spot in the FPI’s new rankings.

In the SEC, LSU and Tennessee each moved up with wins. Texas A&M dropped 2 spots after losing to the Volunteers.
