The SEC has had some great teams over the years. But which one would be the conference’s greatest of all time?

ESPN.com provided its answer to that question with its ranking of the 150 greatest college football teams of all time.

A panel of 150 media members, athletic administrators and former players and coaches selected the 150 greatest college football teams of all time from 210 finalists initially identified by ESPN’s Stats & Information group.

Here are the top 10 SEC teams of all time, per that list, as shared by SEC Network on Twitter:

  1. 1979 Alabama Crimson Tide
  2. 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide
  3. 1992 Alabama Crimson Tide
  4. 1980 Georgia Bulldogs
  5. 1998 Tennessee Volunteers
  6. 1966 Alabama Crimson Tide
  7. 2010 Auburn Tigers
  8. 2015 Alabama Crimson Tide
  9. 1961 Alabama Crimson Tide
  10. 2011 Alabama Crimson Tide

The 1979 Alabama team, which ranked as the SEC’s best, made the list as college football’s eighth greatest team of all time.

That Crimson Tide squad won the last of head coach Bear Bryant’s six national championships. Alabama shut out five teams that season, while holding five others to 10 or fewer points. The Crimson Tide ended that campaign with a victory over Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl.

Alabama dominated the list of SEC teams, making up seven of the conference’s 10 greatest teams of all time. The most recent team on the list is the 2015 Crimson Tide, who went 14-1 and defeated Clemson in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
