The offseason hasn’t been kind to Derek Mason.

Not only did he lose potential starting quarterback Patton Robinette after spring practice and top wideout C.J. Duncan to a season-ending leg injury this week, Mason’s been the butt of all SEC jokes leading up to the opener.

The Commodores stumbled to a winless finish in conference play last fall, leading to Mason being a unanimous choice as the league’s shakiest coach in the job security department.

Add Georgia’s Mark Richt to that list.

ESPN insider Travis Haney updated his ’10 Coaches on the Hot Seat’ list on Friday and put Mason and Richt at Nos. 8 and 10, respectively.

He cited Vanderbilt’s non-conference schedule as the potential breaking point for Mason during his season season. The Commodores open with Western Kentucky on Sept. 3 and take road trips to Middle Tennessee and Houston to highlight the non-SEC slate.

Haney writes:

A visit to Middle Tennessee looms large for Vandy. Two years removed from consecutive nine-win seasons, losing to an in-state team from Conference USA would not send a strong message.

As for Richt, Georgia’s administration has come to a crossroads if the Bulldogs don’t reach the SEC Championship Game this fall despite averaging nearly 10 wins per season since his arrival.

The Bulldogs easily have more talent than any team in the division; there would be no excuse for anything short of a division title.
