ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt has not ducked his slow start to the season picking games as he’s off to an 18-20 start. That didn’t keep him from dipping into the biggest game of the week, both in the SEC and nationally.

Van Pelt said in a game between “ferocious” defenses, he likes the Gators plus 2.5 against Auburn. One note about Van Pelt’s picking history is he’s 5-2 picking top 10 matchups in the SEC. If those defenses show up, that shapes up to a rather low scoring game.

“Florida always seems to get one of these at home,” Van Pelt said. “We’re saying it’s this one.”

Florida is trying to keep up its strong defensive showing at home as the Gators haven’t allowed a touchdown in three home games this season. They’ve outscored Tennessee, UT-Martin and Towson 117-3.

Some of the key matchups appear to be that Florida defense against the likes of RB JaTarvious Williams and WR Anthony Schwartz. On the other side, it’s Florida’s suspect offensive line against the vaunted Auburn defensive line.

It’s a historic matchup on many fronts, including Florida wearing throwback uniforms from the 1960s. It’s also their first meeting since 2011 and the first top 10 matchup in Gainesville since 2012. Needless to say, it’s another barometer for both teams, who are off to solid starts this season.
