Earlier this month, the design of this season’s national championship ring was revealed, and it is quite the token of luxury. Take a look:

What makes this ring special is that it’s the first national championship ring of the College Football Playoff era, as indicated by the CFP logo at the heart of the design. The ring is even engraved not only with the words “College Football Playoff,” but also with the word “Inaugural” to indicate the first year of the new playoff system.

The new design for the ring is spot-on, but this got us thinking: How does this year’s ring stack up to championship rings of years past? With a little help from the popular site SportsRings.net, let’s relive some of the rings that stood out through the years.

We’ll begin with last season’s Florida State Seminoles. FSU earned some pretty sweet bling during last year’s ACC and national title runs, and those rings appear to be customized for each member of the team, including head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Let’s start by taking a look at one of Alabama’s rings from its recent stretch of dominance under Nick Saban. The ring has slightly less flash to it than FSU’s ring does, and the design is much simpler. Still, this ring has plenty of bling, and including the Tide’s perfect 14-0 record on the side was likely a popular decision.

2006

Here’s a look at the rings given to the Florida Gators in 2006 when they won their first of two national titles under Urban Meyer. Again, the look is simple but the bling is heavy. You’ll certainly grab someone’s attention wearing this thing.

2002

Ohio State’s national title rings from 2002 still have plenty of gems coating the face, but the design is far simpler than anything done in the last 10 years. This ring does not seem to include the school’s name, a score, a record from the season, nothing. Instead it simply states the ring is in honor of the 2002 national championship, although the game was played in early 2003. Still, it is a pretty nice ring, and there’s no confusing its meaning.

1996

Florida’s championship rings from Steve Spurrier’s national title run in 1996 are not as overwhelming on the eye, yet still maintain enough flash to signify a national title. This ring include’s Florida’s blue in the background, similarly to the way Alabama’s rings in ’09 donned ‘Bama’s classic crimson.

1992

Ring1992

The rings from Alabama’s national championship in 1992, now 22 years ago prior to the start of the BCS era, actually appear flashier than the rings from 1996 and 2002. The Alabama “A” on the face of the ring indicates the nation’s best team that year, and the diamonds coating the outside of the ring call attention to the milestone accomplishment. To this point, these rings have stood the test of time.

1968

Ring1968

To close our journey through the evolution of the national championship ring we travel all the way back to the 1968 season to take a look at Ohio State’s title rings. These rings are the simplest we’ve seen in this barrage of bling, replacing the bevy of diamonds coating many of those rings with one large OSU-colored gem at the heart of the keepsake. The ring reads “Ohio” in classic OSU print to make it special to that year’s title winners, and it uses some enormous lettering to boast the Buckeyes’ accomplishment. This ring proves that sometimes simple can indeed be better.
