Female broadcaster Beth Mowins to make history for ESPN in 2017
As Bob Dylan famously said, times they are a changin’. That’s still true today as ESPN has announced Beth Mowins will become the first woman to call a nationally televised NFL game.
If her name sounds familiar, it’s because she’s been calling college football games for ESPN since 2005. Her NFL nationally televised debut is set to take place Week 1 on ESPN in the second game of the Monday Night Football doubleheader for the Los Angeles Chargers at Denver Broncos game. Mowins will be joined in the booth by former NFL head coach Rex Ryan.
“This is an amazing opportunity and I look forward to working with Rex and our entire ESPN team,” Mowins said via release. “As lifelong fans of the NFL Monday Night Football franchise, we want to bring the same passion to the broadcast as our predecessors have all done.”
While she will become the first woman to call a nationally televised NFL game, Mowins will not be the league’s first woman to call a game. Gayle Sierens holds that distinction, as she called a regular season game back in 1987.
