Five-star cornerback Deangelo Gibbs is one of the prized prospects of the 2017 recruiting cycle.

Rated as the No. 10 overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings, the Loganville, Ga. product is wanted by most every SEC school.

But Georgia has long been considered the favorite to land Gibbs, and there is a certain amount of pressure on new Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart to convince this elite talent to stay in state.

Smart has the fact that a former high school teammate is already on the team (Chad Clay), and another (Breon Dixon) is committed to play in Athens.

Those factors make it far from a lock, though.

According to a report from SEC Country, Gibbs is still very much interested in Alabama.

He’s already made a visit to Alabama, and when he decides to go back, he knows what to expect.

“They tell me if you don’t look forward to winning, then don’t come here,” he said. “Don’t go to Alabama then. Period. Because you are going to win here.”

“Winning those championships is easier said than done,” Gibbs said. “But one thing is for sure if you go to Bama, you are going to win regardless of the situation.

“I doubt Alabama, under Nick Saban, will ever have anything close to a losing season because Coach Saban is a great coach. So if you don’t look forward to winning and doing all the work it takes to win at Bama, then don’t go to Bama. Alabama is going to win. Period.”

Throw Tennessee into the discussion as well, because Butch Jones has a good deal of interest and 2016 Vols signee Nigel Warrior is reported to be Gibbs’ cousin. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner writes that at one point Gibbs and Warrior were considered to be a package deal.

While other SEC schools, such as Auburn and Ole Miss, could still be in play, it is starting to look like Alabama and Tennessee may pose the biggest challenge to Georgia on this one.
