The Miami Dolphins waived safety Maurice Smith on Monday for the second time this season after he’s appeared in three games. He was also active against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but did not play.

Smith was released to make room for OT Sam Young.

Smith played his first three college seasons at Alabama before he followed defensive coordinator Kirby Smart to Georgia as a graduate transfer when Smart became the head coach of the Bulldogs in 2016. A backup at Alabama, Smith became a team captain at Georgia in his final college season.

Smith had played in Miami’s four games since being signed off the Dolphins’ practice squad on Sept. 18. He’d been on the field for 26 defensive snaps and 62 special-teams plays, with all the action on defense coming in the Sept. 30 game against the New England Patriots, according to AL.com.

When the Dolphins reduced their 90-player preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 on Sept. 1, Smith made the cut. But on Sept. 3, Miami waived the defensive back to add Young to the roster. The next day, the Dolphins signed him to their practice squad after he cleared waivers.

The Dolphins released Young on Saturday because they wanted to add defensive-line depth for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. Defensive tackle Jamiyus Pittman came up from Miami’s practice squad, and he made his NFL debut by playing 17 defensive snaps in Miami’s 31-28 overtime victory on Sunday.

Smith, an undrafted rookie last season, played in six games, with 23 defensive snaps and 82 special-teams plays  before appendicitis ended his season. He finished 2017 on Miami’s non-football illness list.
