Former Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter was among those who offered his reaction to the news on Wednesday of Urban Meyer facing questions about what he knew about allegations of domestic violence against a former assistant coach.
Carpenter, appearing on ESPNU on SiriusXM, cautioned against rushing to judgement in a “microwave society” and urged listeners to wait for more facts and information in the case.
“There are a lot of things that look really bad right now, and a lot of things that are mounting up and piling up,” Carpenter said. “But that’s taking everything at 100 percent truth and I don’t know that it is, and I’m not saying it is, and I’m not here to say that it is. Not necessarily poke holes, but Ohio State hasn’t issued a statement yet.”
Carpenter’s interview came before Ohio State placed Meyer on paid administrative leave Wednesday evening.
Carpenter was a linebacker at Ohio State from 2002-05 and drafted in the first round by the Dallas Cowboys in 2006. Meyer was named the Buckeyes’ coach in late 2011.
“I don’t know, you don’t know, I’m not sure anybody really knows who knew what, when they knew it and what exactly happened,” Carpenter said.
Carpenter said there could be a path for Meyer to stay without suspension, “depending on who he told and what other people knew at the present time.”
