The Ole Miss Rebels are more than a week removed from their annual Grove Bowl and the conclusion of the spring practice season, and head coach Hugh Freeze has since shared his own thoughts on what he most desires for a future spring game.

“I would love to see us be able to scrimmage another team,” Freeze said in a recent radio interview with A to Z Sports in Nashville, according to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

The Rebels fourth-year head coach said he’d like to compete against an FCS team in place of an intrasquad scrimmage for the spring game, and noted that the spring game against an FCS foe could replace games against FCS competition during the regular season.

Freeze added that he would bring up the idea to other SEC coaches at the annual SEC spring meetings.

“The kids want you to divide up (the team). The fans want you to divide up. Really, I’m not sure how much we get out of it,” Freeze said in the radio interview. “I know we don’t get as much out of it if we just had another practice against each other. That’s not really what everyone wants to see. So I kind of give into that.”

The suggestion to play an outside opponent as a spring game comes in the aftermath of an injury-plagued spring for the Rebels. Ole Miss spent most of the spring with only eight healthy offensive linemen, and if it hadn’t raised that number to 10 before the Grove Bowl the Rebels were going to have to amend the rules of the scrimmage.
