Greg McElroy took on a question from an Alabama fan on a topic that has become a growing narrative this offseason about what kind of gap there is between the Crimson Tide and Georgia.

An Alabama fan pointed out that in the last 14 years, Georgia is 1-7 against Alabama. However, the Bulldogs obviously have won the last 2 national championships.

McElroy started his response by saying that Georgia is the standard in college football.

“That is not some secret, that is not some hypothesis,” McElroy said. “This is fact. They’ve won consecutive national championships, they are right now based on preseason prognostications favored by many to win 3 in a row.”

McElroy then explained how Georgia did a tremendous job to replace talent, especially on defense following the 2022 NFL Draft.

“Many people, self included, had question marks going into last year,” McElroy said, and added that in many cases, Georgia was better across the board last year than in 2021. “They’re the standard, they’re No. 1 right now, there’s no denying that.”

He admitted that Alabama was the standard for a decade or more.

McElroy said citing the long-term record stretches into the Mark Richt era, and the start of the Smart era at Georgia before the program was built the way it is now.

“There’s no reason to try to pretend to believe the gap doesn’t exist, there is a little bit of a gap right now,” McElroy said. “But all that can change this upcoming year because you’re only as good as your last game.”
