Greg McElroy took a moment to analyze the current makeup of the College Football Playoff‘s seeding system following the final official reveal of the rankings Sunday.

The former Alabama quarterback explained that he largely agreed with the way things were handled this season, but he does believe that there will be room for change over this offseason.

“We need to really reassess how we do seeding. What guarantees we’re making, if you win a conference are you getting a bye?” McElroy said. “I agree, just seed them 1-12 and see how they stack up.”

McElroy went on to explain that he certainly acknowledges the difficult decision that was put in front of the committee this year, but he wants to see more value placed on strength of schedule moving forward.

“This was a very difficult conclusion to come to because there was really no winning as you all alluded to for the past half hour. There were consequences on both sides,” McElroy said. “You put Alabama in the field, you are now de-incentivizing playing in a conference championship game because SMU had they decided not to play… they’re at 8, what are you going to do drop them out? Or, you’re going to de-incentivize the strength of schedule and teams being willing to go out of conference and play more difficult opponents. There was no winning here, it was a catch-22 for the committee… it’s hard to push back on it, but I do think moving forward, with where we’re at with bloated conferences… we need to put a heavier weight on strength of schedule.”
