In a somewhat stunning reversal, Rutgers University has hired Greg Schiano as its next head coach, according to multiple reports.

Schiano is coming home after talks originally broke down a week ago. The coach had a list of demands (that weren’t too bad!) in his final counter offer, and Rutgers would not budge on them. So, the university walked away from the deal. That led the media to absolutely obliterate the school publicly and boosters saying they wouldn’t give anymore money to the school.

Rutgers heard all of the noise and reengaged talks with Schiano, who was the Scarlet Knights head coach from 2001-11. He left Rutgers for the NFL with an overall record of 67-66. Now, he finds a very different Rutgers program and one like what he inherited in 2001. Schiano ended up taking the Scarlet Knights to six bowl games in seven seasons at one point during his tenure. He compiled a 56-33 record during that time.

Rutgers finished 2-10 this season and fired its former head coach Chris Ash.

Schiano didn’t coach anywhere in 2019. He previously coached for Ohio State in 2016-18, and he was reportedly hired by the Patriots as the defensive coordinator for 2019. However, before the deal was confirmed by the team, Schiano resigned unexpectedly citing his desire to spend more time on his faith and family.
