The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors earned a dramatic victory over San Diego State back in Week 13 after the Aztecs missed a potential game-tying field goal with 2 seconds left.

However, many players, coaches and media members thought the game was over and rushed out to midfield to either celebrate or chronicle the action. That’s when things allegedly got ugly.

Per Honolulu Star-Advertiser photographer Jamm Aquino, he was shoved by Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich and pushed to the ground by another Hawaii staffer, suffering injuries and damage to his camera.

Hawaii issued a statement about the allegations:

“We are disappointed that a Star-Advertiser photographer violated sideline protocol by entering the field of play Saturday night.

“Coach Rolovich acknowledges that he came into physical contact with the photographer as he was attempting to clear the field to avoid being penalized because, with two seconds left on the clock, the game was not over. Coach Rolovich regrets the situation occurred. He contacted the photographer late Saturday night and apologized.

“The university is addressing the situation with Coach Rolovich regarding the matter and will have no further comment.”

The newspaper’s editor also had a statement, saying the photographers deserve to be treated properly:

“Our photographers are representing our readers and deserve to be treated as professionals,” said Frank Bridgewater, editor of the Star-Advertiser. “Swearing at and, worse, physically assaulting them, will not be tolerated. We will take whatever steps are needed to protect our photographers’ rights and to ensure that those who abuse them are called out.”

It should be noted that photographers and many others frequently enter the field after games and nothing has been said. We’ll see what comes out of this case moving forward.
