As Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin would say, the SEC’s a ‘line of scrimmage league’ and play up front often determines the final outcome.

There’s plenty of gigantic people-movers in college football’s most competitive conference this fall, headlined by potential future first-round picks Laremy Tunsil, a dominant tackle who’s on everyone’s preseason All-America lists and the massive Denver Kirkland, a blocker many believe is the Razorbacks’ best player overall.

You don’t have to look far down the line to notice the necessity for size. In the SEC, defensive tackles and there’s as many as five who could potentially start as true freshmen — incredible considering the league’s depth at the point of attack.

Here’s a brief summary of our initial findings (on average) earlier this summer, glancing at projected starters for every SEC squad:

HEAVIEST LINE: Arkansas, 319.6 pounds
LIGHTEST LINE: Georgia, 292.2 pounds
TALLEST LINE: LSU, 6-foot-5 4/5
SHORTEST LINE: Ole Miss, Tennessee 6-foot-4

There’s been a couple depth chart shifts during fall camp, notably at Tennessee where fifth-year senior left guard Marcus Jackson is reportedly out for the year with a torn bicep. Offensive coordinator Mike DeBord expects redshirt sophomore Brett Kendrick to stand in and fill that void.

Inexperience is the fear at Florida where several different players are expected to split time at various spots up front. We’re projecting the opening day lineup to be (from right tackle to left) David Sharpe, Antonio Riles, Trip Thurman, Tyler Jordan and Martez Ivey.

Hugh Freeze hasn’t yet decided on a first team at Ole Miss and has repped a handful of guys at both center and guard. The Rebels lost potential starter Rod Taylor to a torn labrum following a recent non-football injury while boxing. We’re confident Laremy Tunsil, Fahn Cooper and Javon Patterson will take three of the five spots, but the other two is a projection at this point.
