A weird story broke on Thursday night regarding Florida State’s upcoming participation in the Independence Bowl.

While the Seminoles will take on Southern Miss next Wednesday, Dec. 27, in Shreveport, they aren’t really supposed to.

But it’s too late.

The reason FSU shouldn’t be eligible was first reported by an everyday Reddit user — “bakonydraco.”

College football insider Brett McMurphy then confirmed what the Reddit user found first — that the Seminoles 77-6 win over FCS opponent Delaware State should not have counted toward the Noles’ bowl eligibility.

“Florida State did not meet the NCAA requirement for bowl eligibility but because of a ‘monumental’ oversight by FSU, the ACC and NCAA, the Seminoles will still play in a bowl for a 36th consecutive season,” McMurphy reported.

From Reddit:

“For an FCS opponent to be countable towards bowl eligibility, the FCS program must have awarded at least 90% of the FCS scholarship limit. After our own investigation, we have determined and confirmed that Delaware State has not met the 90% threshold set by the NCAA. As a result, Florida State’s bowl countable record is 5-6, thus making them ineligible for a bowl game this season.”

Florida State fans should be giving thanks for this “monumental oversight.”

Officials from Florida State, the ACC and NCAA did not respond for comment, McMurphy said.

What a story. Thanks again, internet.
