Joel Klatt reacts to 'hard week' for SEC throughout Week 1
Joel Klatt understands one week of games will not change the perception of an entire conference, especially one as vaunted as the SEC. However, he’s not backing down from the fact Week 1 was a “hard week” for the league.
Fans wanting to find the positives from the weekend have plenty of ammunition with a plethora of offensive outbursts across the board. However, most of the teams who racked up the points and yardage in Week 1 did so against FCS foes or overpowered non-Power 4 opponents.
The one SEC team that did impress Klatt? Georgia, who blew out a ranked opponent with a 34-3 shellacking of Dabo Swinney’s Clemson team in Atlanta. And it’s a good thing the Bulldogs delivered in that marquee matchup.
Klatt pointed to Georgia’s dominance helping to cover up the failures of Texas A&M, Florida and LSU falling in nonconference games. The Aggies and Gators both lost at home in nonconference openers with Notre Dame and Miami securing those wins.
As for LSU, Brian Kelly’s program fell in Las Vegas as Lincoln Riley and USC outplayed and outcoached the Tigers in Week 1. That loss dropped Kelly to 0-3 in season openers since taking the LSU job.
Here’s what Klatt had to say about the SEC’s weekend:
Only Week 1 but that was a hard week for the SEC…@GeorgiaFootball dominance will cover for falling to @NDFootball @CanesFootball @uscfb

LSU was dissapointing. I don’t think anyone outside of Gainesville thought Florida was going to win. A&M was worse than expected on offense, but still made a game of it. What about Vandy? I think the weekend was a push.
