Josh Heupel received a brief ovation from the Oklahoma faithful shortly before kickoff on Saturday night in Norman.

The Tennessee head coach is making his first return to his alma mater since he was fired as the program’s offensive coordinator after the 2014 season. Heupel, of course, is best known at Oklahoma for being the starting quarterback on OU’s 2000 national championship team.

Here’s the tribute that was shown briefly on OU’s stadium less than an hour before kickoff on Saturday night:

In addition to winning the 2000 national championship, Heupel was also the first Oklahoma quarterback to earn consensus All-America honors.

This is a massive game for both programs. Tennessee is looking to move to 4-0 on the season and has looked like a true SEC contender in the early going. Oklahoma also has CFP aspirations this year and would likely move into the top 10 of the AP Top 25 with a win over the Vols on Saturday night.

Oklahoma is a 6-point underdog at home on Saturday night against Tennessee. It’s the first time the Sooners have been underdogs at home since they hosted Ohio State back in 2016.

Oklahoma is 3-1 all-time against Tennessee.
