Kirk Herbstreit announces passing of beloved dog, Ben, with heartfelt note
Kirk Herbstreit has shared a heartbreaking farewell note. Ben, the beloved dog of the college football commentator, has passed away.
Ben had battled Leukemia. He continued to accompany Herbstreit to college and pro football games in recent weeks, but had experienced a recent decline in health after a second chemo injection in late October.
Herbstreit shared Thursday via social media that he had to say goodbye to Ben.
“This is really hard to write but so many of you have loved and cared about Ben that I wanted to let you know,” Herbstreit wrote. “We found out today the cancer had spread throughout Bens organs and there was nothing left we could do-we had to let him go. I’ve had dogs my whole life but Ben was 1-of-1.
“He was smart-loving-gentle-patient-inquisitive-and welcoming to all. Always a big smile and a soft tail wag. He and I could communicate..he and I understood each other and had each others backs. He was with me more than anyone at home and traveling with me for work. Such an easy going companion. Hard day-but he will live within all of us forever. God please bless his majestic soul and thank you for putting him in my life for the last 10 years-a true blessing.
“Love you Ben. “
Herbstreit will be in Baton Rouge this weekend for College GameDay and on the call of the top-15 rivalry showdown between LSU and Alabama.
RIP to a favorite Good Boy of college football fans everywhere.

Very sorry to hear this, Ben was definitely a good boy!
RIP Ben, you were a Damn Good Dawg.
I am sorry for Ben and the whole family. I said before that I had to let my beloved girl go after 16 years and one month of her being with me through the worst times of my life. It was such a hard decision, but she had gotten to the point that there was nothing I could do. Our pets become a part of our lives with their love and devotion. They each take a piece of our hearts with them when they go, and it means there is always the memory of them inside of us. RIP Ben.
Poor pup :(
Life well lived.
Last year I lost my lab mix after 18 years. I can certainly relate.
My girl was a black lab. Peace to you.
Mr Hervstreet, please know you have my most heartfelt prayers offered for both you and Ben the dog continuing every time I have my own Ebony the pound rescued dog with me. Thank you for being the kind of man who loves animals and especially dogs.
To be able to put your arms around your pet,the best feeling in the world.Dog or cat or whoever you share nothing like it. That bond with which you share,it means the most.Kirk,I am so sorry for your loss.May you have peace because Ben is now in your heart forever.
Sorry to hear this.
That was cool he could bring Ben with him on set.
All dawgs go to heaven.
DGD.
Dogs are not just pets in our home. They are family. They greet us with a smile when we have a bad day and are an excellent example of unconditional love. My prayers are with Mr Herbstreit, his family and all who have lost a beloved four legged friend.
It’s always hard losing a beloved pet
