The UCF Knights are undefeated after an impressive comeback against Memphis last weekend, and many fans of the school are clamoring for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

However, UCF’s strength of schedule is weak, and without any signature wins (a win against Pitt and a canceled game against an awful North Carolina team are hardly big Power 5 wins) seems to be an eliminating factor.

On Saturday’s episode of College GameDay, Kirk Herbstreit went off on the UCF situation, saying he thinks there are other Group of 5 teams that are better than the Knights:

“This argument needs to stop being just about UCF,” he said. “I’m a big believer that if you play people — like Boise State used to do — you should be rewarded for that. Why are we focusing on just UCF when it comes to the Power 5? Because I think there are other teams out there that are as deserving or more deserving.

“You need to play somebody in order to be rewarded. UCF, you need to not just be worried about being undefeated and trying to get in the top four, you need to look behind you at teams like Utah State, Appalachian State, Fresno State. These teams, on paper — which is what you want to look at a lot of times — are better than UCF and more deserving than UCF.”

UCF plays Stanford next year and Cincinnati in 2020, and both of those games are better than anything they’ve played since beating Auburn in the Peach Bowl.

We’ll see if the Knights get more respect, or if a team like Fresno State swoops in and overtakes the top G5 spot.
