Greg McElroy believes the first ever early signing period in college football will have huge ramifications across the board.

Traditionally, National Signing Day has occurred on the first Wednesday of February, but this year is the first time that an early signing period will be offered. This early signing period will kickoff Dec. 20, and McElroy believes this will lead to a huge number of assistant coaches changing jobs.

The former Alabama QB and analyst for ESPN said the early period will bring with it a number of “unintended consequences” and cited current assistant coaches from around the country as his source for this take.

“Guys right now, assistant coaches, position coaches in particular. A very dark day is coming on Dec. 21,” said McElroy. “There are going to be a LOT, maybe a record number, of assistant coaches let go or they leave the program that they are currently recruiting too.”

He also cited the decision to add a 10th assistant coach to FBS coaching staffs. McElroy sees that decision, along with the early signing period, leading to “unprecedented movement.”

ESPNU Radio shared audio of McElroy’s comments where he guaranteed more assistant coaching changes on one single day than ever before:
