Kirby Smart isn’t the first coach to take a chance and see the play come up short. He won’t be the last, either. But for now, people associate Smart with failed fake punt attempts.

In a back-and-forth game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin rolled the dice and called a fake punt. The Steelers came up short.

Media personalities and football fans instantly thought of Smart’s call in the SEC Championship Game.

Adding to the parallels, New Orleans went on to score a go-ahead touchdown with the short field.
