Urban Meyer coaches the Ohio State Buckeyes, a team that doesn’t get much love around the SEC. That’s because Meyer beat up on SEC teams  as the head coach of Florida from 2005 to 2010. During those six seasons, he brought the school two national championships, a Heisman Trophy winner, and developed dozens of future NFL draft picks.

Florida’s dominance during that span also allowed an inter-divisional rivalry to be renewed – and at a very high level. Florida only plays Alabama sporadically during the regular season, but the rivalry got a boost at when Meyer and then Nick Saban started winning their respective divisions with regularity. While Meyer was at Florida, the two programs met five different times.

Today, as Alabama and Florida get ready to face each other yet again in the SEC Championship Game, let’s look back at the matchups these teams had when Nick Saban was pitted against Urban Meyer.

This was a time when both programs were the best in the nation, and championships were on the line when they met on the field. This was a time when that spark of a SEC rivalry burst into a full flame.

2008 – NO. 2 FLORIDA 31, NO. 1 ALABAMA 20, SEC CHAMPIONSHIP

Both Florida and Alabama looked unstoppable in 2008. Alabama came into Atlanta with a perfect record, and Florida had only dropped one early in the season. With a trip to the BCS National Championship on the line, Meyer led his team and his Heisman-winning quarterback Tim Tebow to a huge victory over Alabama.  Tebow was exceptional, throwing for three scores and cementing his legend. “I’ve had some great players, and I’ve got some great players on this team,” Meyer said at the time . “But I’ve never had one like this. Tim’s got something special inside him. I’m not talking about throwing. I’m not talking about running. I’m talking about making everyone around him better. That fourth quarter was vintage Tim Tebow.” Florida went on to win the national championship.

2009 – No. 2 Alabama 32, NO. 1 FLORIDA 13, SEC CHAMPIONSHIP

For the second year in a row, Florida and Alabama found themselves as the two best teams in the nation going into the SEC Championship Game. This time, both teams entered the contest with perfect regular seasons. Tebow was in a position to fulfill his promise to the Gator Nation of a perfect season and another national title. However, it was not meant to be. Meyer’s team fell that day, relegating the Gators to the Sugar Bowl instead of the national championship. It was Saban and his Tide who ended up with the perfect season and the BCS National Championship. “Everyone had to buy into not to be denied in this game,” Saban said at the time. “To be a champion, that’s what you had to do. I’ve never been prouder of a group of players.”

2010 –No. 1 Alabama, 31, NO. 7 FLORIDA 6

Florida wasn’t the same team after Tebow graduation and in a regular season meeting in Tuscaloosa the following season, Alabama crushed the Gators. Florida turned the ball over four times and couldn’t do enough on offense behind quarterback John Brantley to make a difference. “We got beat by a good team,” Meyer said. “We just didn’t play very well.” Meyer would resign at the end of the season for health reasons.
