Miami DC Manny Diaz fires back at reporter who said the Canes could have played the game
As the state of Florida prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Irma, football is taking a backseat.
Miami, Florida and Florida State, among others, have already canceled their Week 2 games as people flee from areas expected to get hit hardest by the storm.
When one reporter took to Twitter to explain how the Miami-Arkansas State game could still be played instead of being canceled, Hurricanes defensive coordinator Manny Diaz fired back with a strong response, saying it’s ridiculous to be talking about football when people’s lives are in danger:

Miami coach Mark Richt also addressed the game’s cancellation, saying the Hurricanes had no ulterior motive for canceling it. Instead, he said, the important thing is for players to be safe and be with their families as they evacuate Miami:
To set the record straight we have not practiced since Tuesday and we won't til everyone gets back in town after this CATEGORY 5 hurricane!

Nor have meet as a team or a staff. The safety of our players and staff and the ability for them to be w/ Family is our priority!

Very sad to read some of the comments of some football fans and some members of the media believing we had some other motive! U Family!!

Indeed, the safety of everyone in Florida is more important than football right now. Hopefully things can return to normal soon, but as Irma bears down on the Florida coast, forecasts don’t look great.
