According to a video posted to YouTube on Monday, Mississippi State is just a few weeks away from attempting to set a Guinness World Record for the most cowbells being rung at the same time.

Raise your hand if you were surprised that the Bulldogs didn’t already hold this distinctive and prestigious record.

The Bulldogs plan to attempt setting this record during their annual Cowbell Yell event, which is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10 in advance of the first home game of the season, which will take place that Saturday against LSU.

They plan to have roughly 15,000 people in attendance for the record-breaking attempt.

Like the promotional video said, “This is the kind of weekend students dream about.”

Courtesy of some research completed by Michael Bonner of the Clarion Ledger, this is what we know about the status of the current world record:

“According to Guinness, the largest cowbell ensemble was 640 people on Sept. 6, 2009 in Switzerland. That record may no longer stand, though. According to the Associated Press, 1,021 people rang cowbells at the Cowbell Classic 10K and 5K run on Aug. 1 in Royal Oak, Michigan.”

Now, given those numbers, Mississippi State is almost certain to break this record. Even if just 10 percent of the projected attendance of Cowbell Yell actually shows up, the Bulldogs will safely make their way into the record book.

Hey, Ole Miss fans: I say we should spice this up a little bit, turning it into a good old-fashioned Mississippi rivalry.

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium is projected to hold approximately 58,580 fans in 2015.

Most of you will be there for a real snoozer of a season-opener against Tennessee-Martin on Sept. 5.

Can you come up with a more exciting way to kick off the season than to preemptively set a cowbell ringing record that Mississippi State is unlikely to break with 15,000 people at their Cowbell Yell event five days later?

I’m not saying you’d enjoy ringing cowbells. I’m just saying: Make them earn it.
