The Cincinnati Bengals currently have an opening at defensive coordinator and if the franchise plans to pull an assistant from the college ranks to fill the position, two Southeastern Conference assistants are expected to get interviews for the job.

The Bengals announced former Los Angeles Rams quarterback coach Zac Taylor as the new head coach in Cincinnati this week following the Rams’ run to Super Bowl LIII but the team still has yet to complete its 2019 staff.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko are both expected to interview for the position. This news comes immediately after National Signing Day, which is a time of year many assistant coaches bolt for other jobs in college football. While the timing may be unfortunate for some, there may not have been many opportunities to make this hire previously due to the fact the Bengals hired a coach that was preparing for a Super Bowl run.

Grantham, a veteran of both the SEC and the NFL, has a decade of experience coaching defense at the professional level. Over the previous two seasons, Grantham has proven to be one of the best assistant coaches not only in the SEC but in the nation.

Elko does not have any experience coaching in the NFL but has received some interest in becoming a head coach. If his mission is to leave the college game or simply work his way up the coaching ladder in order to land a head job one day, making this move would make some sense.
