The NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors has expressed concern with the current name, image and likeness (NIL) policies, calling for a review.

University of Georgia President Jere Morehead is the chair of the board, which met virtually Friday. In a statement, Morehead cited booster involvement as one of the board’s concerns.

“We are concerned that some activity in the name, image and likeness space may not only be violating NCAA recruiting rules, particularly those prohibiting booster involvement, but also may be impacting the student-athlete experience negatively in some ways,” Morehead said via NCAA.org. “We want to preserve the positive aspects of the new policy while reviewing whether anything can be done to mitigate the negative ones.”

The NCAA.org story notes that schools’ involvement in arranging for deals was also among the concerns mentioned.

The DI Board of Directors called on the Division I Council to review how NIL policies have impacted student-athletes, including school choice, transfer opportunities, academics and mental health.

“We look forward to conducting this review and hope to be able to provide the membership with additional clarity,” Council chair Shane Lyons said via the NCAA. “Any recommendations we provide will help members as they support their student-athletes moving forward.”

The board requested a preliminary report by April with a final report in June.
