While Georgia and Alabama got the primetime billing last week, and are widely believed as the two best teams in the SEC, there are more stories to discuss and watch unfold for the rest of the season.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit noted that reality on a recent episode of the “CFB Podcast with Herbie, Pollack & Negandhi” Herbstreit was aware that last week was the last one before the Big Ten begins this week, and then the Pac-12 later in the year resumes action. That’s perhaps why he gave a roundup of the non-Alabama stories around the league.

“With the Big Ten and the Pac-12 and the ACC seems to be a lot about Clemson, the Big 12 was a little bit on the back burner with their games last weekend, the SEC was right at the forefront, not just with Georgia and Alabama,” Herbstreit said. “But what Jimbo did on the back end of that great win against Florida was impressive. Auburn continues to just kind of look for answers as they lose to South Carolina. How about Mark Stoops not just beating Tennessee but the way they played. They’re sitting there at 2-2, David and I talked about on GameDay could very easily be 4-0. They’re a few plays away from being 4-0.”

Then he touched on what has become a national story, and an easy situation to root for among several SEC fan bases, especially if their team doesn’t play Arkansas.

“To me the turnaround story of the year continues to be Sam Pittman, former Georgia offensive line coach, goes over to Arkansas and we’ve almost gotten to a point we’ve almost forgotten about that program,” Herbstreit said. “It’s been so irrelevant for so long and they should have beaten Auburn with the way that game ended, they’ve competed, that Ole Miss offense, they couldn’t be stopped by anybody and they end up doing a really good job with Barry Odom. Seems every week he’s got a plan. Even their Georgia loss, they hung around and competed for most of that game until Stetson Bennett got inserted and they pulled away. Dang, Arkansas’ become a fun team to watch and they get a bye week and then they go to Kyle Field to play A&M.

“So outside of the obvious with Alabama, there’s some pretty interesting and fun storylines unfolding in the SEC to kind of see who those second tier teams are eventually going to ultimately be.”
