ESPN’s post-Week 4 power rankings suggests SEC is insanely top heavy

The 2020 season has been full of crazy upsets, intriguing matchups and surprising contenders.

But, in the SEC, playing a 10-game, conference-only schedule has led to teams beating up on each other, which doesn’t lend itself well to top-25 power rankings.

Indeed, when ESPN’s Chris Low updated his power rankings after SEC Week 4 action, only 4 SEC squads made the cut, led by Alabama at No. 1:

  • No. 1 — Alabama
  • No. 4 — Georgia
  • No. 12 — Texas A&M
  • No. 14 — Florida

We’re not used to seeing so few SEC teams in the top 25, but with Auburn at 2-2 (and a controversial call away from 1-3), LSU imploding, Tennessee losing to Kentucky and Mississippi State collapsing after a fast start, there just aren’t that many top-25 worthy teams in the league this year.

We’ll see if something changes after Week 5 action.
