Paul Finebaum spoke about an up-and-coming coach who could be of interest to SEC programs in the future.

The topic of Tulane coach Jon Sumrall came up during Finebaum’s appearance on the Matt Barrie Show on Sunday morning. Sumrall is in his first season with Tulane and has the Green Wave in position to potentially compete for a CFP berth this year.

Finebaum said he’s heard Sumrall’s name in connection to multiple SEC programs.

“I’ve heard Sumrall’s name privately mentioned for 2 different SEC jobs that are not open at the moment,” Finebaum said. “That’s how hot he is about to become. I’m really glad you brought him up. There’s literally 2 [SEC] schools right now, if they made a change, he would be first on their list. That’s how well-received and highly-respected he is.”

Finebaum didn’t specifically say what schools were interested in Sumrall, but later in the episode he said there were “connections” between Sumrall and Auburn.

Sumrall was born in Huntsville, Alabama, and has deep SEC roots. He played at Kentucky and was also previously an assistant coach for the Wildcats from 2019-21 under Mark Stoops. He also had a stint as an assistant coach at Ole Miss back in 2018.

Between 3 seasons at Troy and Tulane, Sumrall is 30-6 as a head coach. Tulane is currently 5-0 in AAC play this season with its only losses on the year coming to Kansas State and Oklahoma.
