With Saturday’s game against Ohio State on the line, Penn State ran the ball on 4th-and-5 instead of keeping it in the hands of senior QB Trace McSorley.

The Nittany Lions ended up losing by one point, and coach James Franklin has been taking some heat for it ever since.

On Sunday morning’s SportsCenter, SEC Network host Paul Finebaum criticized Franklin’s postgame comments, when he said the Nittany Lions are tired of being “great” and will try to be elite. According to Finebaum, that was nonsense (via 247Sports):

“That was pure poppycock,” Finebaum said during Sunday’s appearance on SportsCenter. “Listen, they played well, but they had a total meltdown at the end of the game and he comes in without drivel. It has nothing to do with getting up in the morning, getting to class and has everything to do with that final play call. Own it. Don’t spin it. James Franklin is a very good football coach. He’s not a great football coach, nor is Penn State a great program, it’s very good and trying to get to that level.

“Just stop all the nonsense and take responsibility. Enough of this. I hear this every time Penn State loses a football game. He’s a very good football coach. He’s not Urban Meyer.”

Finebaum has clearly heard this from Franklin before and is tired of it. Until Penn State can consistently compete for Big Ten titles (they won back in 2016), the program won’t be what Finebaum considers “elite.”

For now, it’s back to the drawing board for Penn State, which will have to fight to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive.
