Here are some quick thoughts on Arkansas’ 54-46 win over Auburn in four overtimes Saturday:

What it means: Talk about evenly matched. It was clear both teams realized exactly how much they needed this win, and both were unafraid to put it all on the line in an attempt to get it. Do-or-die scenarios forced Auburn and Arkansas to perform at their best on a complete team level, but Arkansas prevailed with a just-tough-enough defensive stand to end the fourth overtime.

What I liked: Auburn’s offense got off to a slow start but later both offenses were eventually able to move the ball down the field effectively. For the first time this season, Auburn put together more than one scoring drive over 75 yards, going on long drives three times.  Arkansas also had a scoring drive of 75 yards in the first quarter.

What I didn’t like: For both teams, ball handling was an issue when it really should not have been. Dropped balls plagued Auburn in the first half to the point where it clearly effected the ability of the offense to keep drives going. Auburn quarterback Sean White was visibly frustrated when the passes he threw hit the hands of receivers, only to end up on the ground.  Auburn had six drops in the first half. Josh Holsey, Auburn’s injured defensive back, even tweeted during the game about those drops.

For Arkansas, running back Alex Collins caused hearts to race, both good and bad. Collins fumbled twice, once in the first half and once in the second, but got lucky both times when the Razorbacks recovered.

Who’s the man: Collins looked like he was on the way to giving Auburn’s defense Leonard Fournette flashbacks in the first half with the way he was running right up the middle for big gains. He continued to run on Auburn the entire game, and also made a few receptions with a notable one for 22 yards. He finished with 25 carries for 105 yards and one touchdown. Collins did limp off the field after a third-and-goal attempt in the fourth quarter, but returned to play the rest of the game.

Key play: Both offenses scored at will throughout the four overtimes, even on two-point conversions, so it was huge that the Arkansas defense stepped up after scoring in the fourth OT. Arkansas’ pass defense held strong and denied three White pass attempts.

What’s next: Auburn has an important showdown with Ole Miss Saturday. coming up on Halloween. Arkansas has its last nonconference game of the season against Tennessee-Martin next week. However, Razorback fans will be worrying about how badly running back Rawleigh Williams III is hurt. Williams went down with a neck injury in the third quarter.
