Texas A&M began a 3-game homestand to close out the regular season with a hard-fought 38-24 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon at Kyle Field.

With the win, the Aggies’ (6-4) became bowl eligible for their 10th consecutive season, which is tied for the 11th-longest active streak in the FBS and fourth-longest among SEC schools behind Georgia (22), LSU (18), Alabama (15).

It was also Texas A&M’s first win at Kyle Field over Ole Miss since Sept. 13, 1975.

Aggies’ QB Kellen Mond was not outdone by his Ole Miss counterpart, the SEC’s leading passer Jordan Ta’mu. The difference was an Aggies run game, highlighted by RB Trayveon Williams, that helped control time of possession and keep Rebels’ opportunities to a minimum. Williams sealed the victory with a 46-yard touchdown. That run pushed him to 228 yards, the second time this season he has topped 200.

Mond threw 10 yards to Quartney Davis on a fade route to complete a 9-play, 72-yard drive and tie the score at 21 late in the third quarter, and K Seth Small gave the Aggies a 24-21 lead early in the fourth quarter with a 46-yard field goal. Ole Miss K Luke Logan pushed a potential game-tying 22-yard field goal wide right with 7:22 left in the game.

The Aggies took advantage of the miscue and drove 80 yards in six plays to essentially put the game out of reach. Mond found Davis again for the touchdown, on a 5-yard pass, and a 31-21 lead.

Ole Miss added a late field goal, but couldn’t execute an onside kick. Williams scored on the first play after the Aggies recovered.

The Aggies took the second-half kickoff and appeared poised to take the lead. But after driving 58 yards, all on five rushing plays by Williams, including runs of 29 and 21 yards, the impressive march turned into points for Ole Miss. Rebels Willie Hibler forced a Mond fumble and it was scooped up by teammate Zedrick Woods, who dashed 96 yards untouched the other way for an Ole Miss score and a 21-14 lead.

Williams reached the 1,000-yard milestone and become the fifth Aggie in school history to record two 1,000-yard seasons in their career

The teams played to a 14-14 draw at halftime. Texas A&M, the SEC leader in time of possession with an average of 36:27 per game, drove 71 yards in 14 plays, eating up seven full minutes of the first-quarter clock to take a 7-0 lead. Mond scored on a 1-yard run to complete the drive in which he completed 4-of -6 passes for 40 yards.

Ole Miss answered right back on the ensuing drive with Ta’amu throwing a 44-yard touchdown pass to DaMarkus Lodge. The Rebels needed just five plays and 1:58 of the clock to travel 75 yards and tie the game.

The Rebels took a 14-7 lead on their next possession, going 75 yards in seven plays with Ta’amu rushing for a 1-yard touchdown. He fueled the drive with pass completions of 39 and 12 yards to A.J. Brown and Lodge respectively. Ta’amu completed 8-of-9 passes for 203 yards in the first half.

The Aggies tied it late in the second quarter with an 8-play, 85-yard drive after it looked like Ole Miss would extend its lead. But Kingsley Keke forced and then recovered a fumble by Ta’amu at the Aggies’ 15-yard line, ending a 77-yard drive.

Mond promptly completed 5-of-6 passes for 81 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Camron Buckley that knotted things up.

At halftime, the Aggies led in time of possession 19:16-10:44.

Ole Miss RB Scottie Phillips, who entered the game 77 yards shy of 1,000 for the season, was injured in the first half and did not return. He carried just three times for four yards.
