The rematch of last season’s national championship game in this year’s SEC Championship Game was a ratings smash for CBS.

According to CBS Sports’ PR department, the game was the most watched “regular-season” college football game on any network in seven years. Fans may debate whether CBS Sports is right in calling it a regular-season game as conference championship games are widely regarded as postseason. Presumably, this is to designate that it was the highest non-bowl/national championship game in seven years.

Ratings were up 25 percent from last year’s Auburn vs. Georgia game, scoring 10.5/22 in metered markets.

After hours of edge-of-your-seat drama, Alabama fans experienced the joy of a thrilling come-from-behind victory while the Georgia faithful were forced to stomach another heartbreaking loss in Atlanta to the Crimson Tide. SEC fans and college football fans were treated to one of the best games of the 2018 season, an undisputed new classic.
