Only two days before Christmas, Illinois coach Lovie Smith played the Grinch and fired his offensive coordinator.

That coordinator was Garrick McGee, who served in the same role at Arkansas in 2010 and 2011 (also serving as QB coach in 2008 and 2009).

FootballScoop.com broke the news of the firing on Saturday, saying both McGee and DB coach Paul Williams were being let go:

Illinois had another abysmal year in 2017 and ranked No. 126 (out of 130 FBS teams) in terms of total offense, averaging only 280.4 yards per game.

However, why the firing of McGee couldn’t wait until after Christmas is unclear, as the Illini are likely not going to attract a big-name offensive coordinator at this point.

Considering McGee served on Bobby Petrino’s staff at Arkansas, seeing him pop up on Petrino’s Louisville staff next year wouldn’t be too surprising.
