Along with the Purdue Boilermakers, who lost the Music City Bowl to Auburn 63-14, the Houston Cougars have one of the most-embarrassing losses of bowl season.

The Cougars fell in the Armed Forces Bowl to Army by the lopsided score of 70-14 and were out of sorts all day long without several of their top players.

However, finishing the year with an 8-5 record is unacceptable by Houston’s self-set standards, so many are wondering if coach Major Applewhite’s job is in trouble. Per FootballScoop.com, the Cougars are considering a change, and are looking at bringing West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen to town:

Rather than rebuild after two unsatisfactory seasons (by the school’s stated standard), sources said U of H boosters are evaluating all options, including considering bringing in West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen to replace Applewhite.

Would Holgorsen really leave a Power 5 job to head to the AAC? It would be tough, but after a disappointing finish by the Mountaineers this year, he could be ready for a change.

Holgorsen does have a history with the program, though, serving as the Cougars’ offensive coordinator in 2008 and 2009.
