The SEC could soon be sending one of its teams to Las Vegas on an annual basis in 2020 when the new bowl cycle begins.

In a follow-up to a report he had last week, college football insider Brett McMurphy reiterates that the SEC is interested in taking the Mountain West’s spot in the Las Vegas Bowl beginning in 2020. The bowl game is planning to move from Sam Boyd Stadium to the new home of the NFL’s Raiders when they make the move to the desert.

According to McMurphy, who wrote about the plans on his Facebook page, the SEC and Pac-12 are hoping to make the game one of the more marquee events of the college football postseason:

“I’m told the matchup could be the Pac-12’s second or third selection vs. the SEC’s third or fourth selection and the game obviously would be moved off the first Saturday of bowl season.”

McMurphy also reported that the NCAA is expected to add an additional three games to the college football postseason starting in 2020, including a Chicago Bowl — to be played at Wrigley Field, and a Myrtle Beach Bowl. The SEC is also expected to have 10 bowl tie-ins starting in 2020, not including the league’s tie to the Sugar Bowl.

The NCAA is expected to officially announce its new bowl plans by the start of July.
