SEC football fans everywhere miss EA Sports’ “NCAA Football” video game series.

The popular console game was shut down after a lawsuit determined that players were owed royalties for their likeness being used in the game. There have been rumors about the game being revived, but no official announcements.

ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell says there’s “no traction” on EA Sports making the game again after talking to 10 insiders coming from the video game industry and major athletic departments. Figuring out how and how much to play the players is too much for the company to take on to sell a $60 game.

Rovell does offer an interesting idea for bringing the game back: Sony or Microsoft invest to make the game a console exclusive.

What’s their incentive? It may pay for console makers to use the game to sell the actual consoles. Imagine how many could be sold with an exclusive NCAA football game bundle.

While a significant portion of the gaming population would already be set and could get by with only purchasing the game, it does pose an interesting question: Are “NCAA Football” fans loyal enough to switch or upgrade consoles?

Would you buy a new console just to get a proper “NCAA Football” back?
