Nebraska head coach Scott Frost made headlines last week when he told USA Today that he stands behind only one national champion, the team that wins the College Football Playoff.

Obviously, Alabama won it all, and his former team, UCF, didn’t, despite finishing undefeated and beating Auburn in the Peach Bowl.

All off-season, UCF’s massive marketing campaign about winning a “national championship” has been everywhere. Recently UCF hung a 2017 national champions banner in its home stadium, and it even gave players a national championship ring.

But Frost isn’t completely on that bandwagon, and he said that he would have a hard time getting behind the Knights’ claim.

On Thursday, Frost joined Orlando radio station, 96.9 The Game, and he doubled down on his comments about UCF’s claim to a national championship.

“I don’t regret saying it,” Frost said. “I’m so proud of that team and will be forever and happy for those guys, and I don’t want anything I said in an answer having the appearance of diminishing what we accomplished.”

Although he can’t get on board with UCF’s claim, he completely supports an eight-team playoff that would give a team like UCF a shot.

“Right now there’s a system in place that crowns a national champion and I think it’s better than when I was in college,” Frost said. “I think it should be eight with five conference champions and three at large teams. That would open up a door to a team like UCF that has a great year to get in it.”

Frost was also asked about Greg McElroy’s claim that several teams, including Auburn — the team that lost to UCF in the Peach Bowl, would have “dusted” UCF in a national championship game setting.

“That’s a pretty strong statement considering what happened in that game with Auburn, but that’s kind of my point is all that is speculation.”
